After studies at St. Augustine's Monastery, Canterbury, Kent, under the celebrated abbot St. Adrian, John entered Whitby Abbey, Yorkshire. In 687 he succeeded St. Eata as bishop of Hexham, Northumberland, and in 705 was consecrated bishop of York. He founded a
